Over the years there has been a number of reported fires at plants operating within the oil and gas industry.  The majority of these incidents will be attributed to Hydrocarbon Releases (HCRs).

Hydrocarbon Releases are high flammable and are classified as major, significant or minor based on their potential to cause a major accident if ignited.  Therefore the requirement for materials with high temperature and fire-safe capabilities is paramount.

High temperature gaskets or sheet materials used in these applications should be fire-safe to API
standard 6FB (third edition), and be able to withstand a wide temperature range – cryogenic
to 1000°C and corrosive environments.

What is the API 6FB fire-test?

API 6FB is a fire-safety test, a 6” class 300 gasket is mounted into a flange and hit with a flamethrower
for several hours, the leak-rate through the joint is then measured and reported.

Typical high temperature applications include:

  • Petrochemicals
  • Fertilisers
  • Oil & Gas
  • Steam and Exhaust
  • Waste Gas
  • Power
  • Automotive
  • Emerging Technologies (Solid Oxide Fuel Cells - SOFC)
